Algonquin Provincial Park

The Algonquin Log Cabin, beautifully situated on the shores of Surprise Lake, can accommodate up to 12 guests and offers comfortable amenities while preserving an interior décor that is simple and in harmony with nature. Cabin features include shared indoor washroom facilities, kitchen, dining area with fireplace, lounge, double occupancy rooms, wide porch, and sauna with access to hot shower (separate building). There is no cell phone coverage or electricity in the cabin.

Quest shuttle van picking you up at your downtown hotel (pickups start at 07:00), or at the Algonquin Log Cabin (12:30) at the northwest corner of Algonquin Park if you are driving yourself. We arrive at Algonquin Log Cabin for a delicious patio lunch. Following our meal, you climb into the 7.92m Voyageur canoe for a lesson on the basics of this ancient craft before a leisurely paddle to Kitchie Island. You will have the option to return to the Log Cabin to relax, or continue your adventure by paddling to Otter Bay for an introduction to the boreal forest, beaver ponds,and the Canadian Shield. We disembark and enjoy a fascinating guided interpretative hike. Boarding our canoes and returning to the cabin, the remainder of the afternoon is free to swim in the crystal-clear waters of the lake, use the sauna or just relax and unwind. The evening is welcomed by a delicious dinner followed by an twilight paddle to the songs of the loon and wolf. Overnight at the Algonquin Log Cabin. Lunch and dinner included

Algonquin Log Cabin

An edible wilds walk for breakfast will take you to Lookout Bluff, where you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Algonquin lakes. Lunch will be taken back at the lodge and the remainder of the afternoon can be spent at leisure. Perhaps you’d like to participate in a workshop on bush and woodcraft and various forms of traditional Canadian crafts. Later in the day, you paddle to a campfire point to watch the sunset, build a bonfire and have dinner. Learn about the northern sky as you watch the stars sparkle in the night above on the paddle to the Lodge. Overnight at the Algonquin Log Cabin. Breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

Algonquin Log Cabin

The optional sunrise paddle might give you the opportunity to surprise a sleepy moose having breakfast in the shallows by the shoreline (best wildlife viewing is in late June/early July). Your breakfast will be a tasty maple syrup cookout which you will savour on the return from moose viewing. The remainder of the morning will be spent in a Voyageur canoe exploring lakes with unique formation history, due to the Canadian Shield’s influence. Return to the lodge for a Canadian barbeque lunch before being transferred by Voyageur Quest van shuttle (shuttle applicable to package including transfers). The van arrives in Toronto at approximately 18:00.

PACKING SUGGESTIONS
Bring a rain jacket (with hat or hood) and trousers, wool or fleece sweater, long jeans or cotton pants, shorts, cotton T-shirt or shirt with long sleeves, swimsuit, towel, two pairs of shoes – running shoes or lightweight hiking boots, sun hat, personal toiletries, sun lotion, glasses, insect repellent, flashlight and pocket knife. Long underwear and mittens are recommended in May, June, September and October. Bring your own alcoholic beverages.

HOW TO GET THERE:

CAR
From Toronto - 302 km, approximately 3.5 hours Take highway 401 (east or west) to highway 400. Go north on highway 400 towards Barrie. At Barrie, follow signs for highway 11 north to North Bay. Continue on highway 11 north to the town of South River. Look for Boundary/Mountainview Rd Exist 282. Take this exit 2.5 km towards South River. Turn left onto Highway 124 (old Hwy 11) at the intersection beside the new high school (on your right) and follow for 2.5 km.

At South River
Turn east onto Ottawa Ave (right turn from Toronto, left turn from North Bay). Follow
Ottawa Avenue east out of town. It will bend a number of times and you will travel past Swift Canoes, Tracs Outfitters and eventually over a bridge. Once over the bridge, follow the road approximately 25 minutes (about 17-18 km). Turn left at the Forestry Road sign. The electricity poles also make the left hand turn at the WENDIGO LAKE sign. Follow the Forestry Road for 5.6 km past Camp Wendigo to the first left hand turn (this will be 2.3 km past Camp Wendigo.) There is a Voyageur Quest sign on your left. Make a left turn at this intersection and follow 0.8 km to the Algonquin Log Cabin by: Following road to V - stay left (you will see a VQ sign as well as other cottage signs). Follow past white cottages – staying left to the Algonquin Log Cabin driveway. GPS reference is 45.9566, - 79.233.
