Hraunfossar Waterfalls – Barnafoss waterfalls- Deildartunguhver Hot Spring – Reykholt

Breakfast at your hotel. Combine history, natural spring water and relaxation on a small group tour. You will be picked up at your hotel or nearest tour bus stop (check with your hotel staff regarding the tour departure point). Visit the west of Iceland and get the essential Icelandic experience of natural wonders, spa relaxation and Viking age history. The scenic Borgarfjordur region is not well known to visitors, but it is an area Icelanders from Reykjavik love to visit on getaways. We think you’ll fall in love with this relaxing region, too.

The day starts with a visit to Reykholt, one Iceland’s most notable historical sites. Reykholt is most famous for being the manor home of Iceland's best-known author, Snorri Sturluson, during the years 1206-1241. A powerful chieftain, Snorri was an interesting man who played a big role in the events of the violent Sturlunga Age. An ancient geothermally heated pool, Snorralaug, is named after him. It is one of the few things preserved whole from Iceland’s medieval period. Ironically. Thanks to Snorri’s writings we know about the mythology and religion of the Viking people.

Then head on to Hraunfossar waterfalls, or Lava Falls – a beautiful and unusual natural phenomena. Clear, cold springs of subterranean water seep through the lava and ripple down as tiny waterfalls and rapids into the Hvita River. A series of scenic footpaths takes you to different viewpoints around the waterfalls. Also in the area is Barnafoss, the Children’s Falls. The water here is a brilliantly blue color. The falls are named after a sad incident that took place here long ago.

Next you will head to Deildartunguhver, Europe’s most powerful hot spring. The water rushes by rapidly at a speed of 180 liters (48 gallons) per second. Right next to Deildartunguhver is Krauma Geothermal Baths. The spa’s hot water comes from  Deildartunguhver, at a temperature of 100°C (212°F). To achieve the perfect bathing temperature Krauma mixes the hot water with icy water from a mountain spring. Krauma offers five relaxing natural geothermal baths, a cold tub to get your blood circulation going, two calming saunas and a relaxation room where you can rest by the fireplace while listening to soothing music. Krauma’s restaurant has a real West Icelandic focus with vegetables, dairy products and meat from area farms.

After your relaxing day, you will Return to Reykjavik in the early evening.
